How time flies

I can't believe how quickly this year is passing - must be getting old!!
Various degrees of success in the garden - tagetees and calendulas continue to be the best value option for my summer garden and still in flower now although their days are numbered as a cold wind is blowing outside.
Will pull up the calendulas and scatter their seeds for free display next year - everyone comments on the border at the end of my drive asking what they are?? Sometimes just the simplest things are the best
Mixed with the purple erysmium they have given a splendid show all summer long.

Now though our thoughts here are turning to Christmas and yes, some of you are already doing your Christmas shopping. I could never get my head around it until after the October school half term but now running this business has meant I have to be one step ahead!!.

Is gardening just for oldies??

Earlier this week I read an article about sure fire ways that suggest you are getting old - you know the sort of thing - moaning when you get up cos your knees/hips hurt, you can't hear so well, hair appearing where it shouldn't, policemen/doctors getting younger etc etc.

Yet some way down that list it also said that as you age you take up gardening???

Well I'm no spring chicken but I have been messing about in gardens for ages, growing my own veg in my mid twenties even before it was fashionable and just loving the outdoor life. Did that make me old before my time - I don't think so and if the Garden Divas customer base is anything to go by then I would say there are loads of trendy young (well youngish) gardeners out there.

You also have to be pretty fit to be a gardener, all that mowing, digging, pruning and sowing - taking up gardening in later life could be a real shock to the system for some.

So to all you gardeners out there whether male, female, young or old - keep up the good work and just enjoy a fab hobby and remember you don't have to be old to take up gardening.

Ups and downs of gardening

I love gardening, really I do, but sometimes it is a bit of a challenge to stay "on top" of everything.
First of all there was a really dry spring at a time when sowing and planting is at it's peak and now as I write this blog at the end of June it is raining heavily and the roses outside my window are taking a bashing, their perfumed petals falling to the ground. I know I shouldn't complain about the rain - it's just it's the wrong type of rain!!
I meant to nip out the tops of my broadbeans (as suggested in an earlier blog) but the business was extra busy (not complaining about that) and I forgot so yes they got covered in blackfly. Still I've taken out the tops now and the broadbeans lower down the plants are fine and really rather nice.
I dug up some Aaron Pilot potatoes (resistant to scab) - well these weren't but I confess they were from a bargain basement store so won't be doing that again. Always buy Scottish certified seed potatoes. Next I dug up some Charlotte potatoes and they were amazing and delicious par boiled and sauted for tea.
Here they are in a pink Burgon & Ball Garden Trug
- so useful for bringing in the veg and featured in a recent Daily Mail Weekend Magazine as one of the best trugs.
My runner beans were put out too early and succumbed to a rather chilly easterly wind so have had to re-sow (twice) cos the slugs got the second lot.
My wisteria died but has left me a brilliant frame work for an alternative climber .
My tagetees got too leggy in the greenhouse but have nipped out the tops with the deadheads so they are bushing out nicely, although a little late.

My husband (bless him) has never been a keen gardener leaving "that sort of thing" to me but just lately he has discovered he enjoys weeding (only in the veg plot tho) and is even going out into the garden after work.
Now that really is an up!!

My garden hands!!

Walking back from yet another visit to the dentist this week made me wish I had taken more care of my teeth even though my dentist gleefully informed me that they are now past their sell by date - ie I'm getting too old - what a cheek!!

It then got me thinking about the other parts I may have have neglected including my hands!! I gardened for years without using gloves and I don't recommend that either!! Then about 6 years ago I discovered the Floreo 370 Garden Gloves.

- a godsend for someone who likes to garden but who also likes to really feel what she is doing. Now there is a plethora of gloves available to protect our hands ( and I have garden gloves for all occasions) and whats more they are pretty and comfortable to wear too. And even if you are suffering from arthritis ( and I confess my thumb joint hurts a bit now) there are the Bionic Blooms Gloves with their special padding and support.

What a pity I didn't discover any gloves I felt I could garden in for years - the result - my nails and finger tips were always ingrained with a little dirt - not a good look when going out for the evening! They're still not that great now after years of potting, sowing and general digging in the dirt but at least they stay clean plus I now have a great hand care set from Gardener's Therapies
which includes a liquid glove barrier cream - how cool is that!! So there is no excuse - if I don't feel like wearing gloves I can just slap some of this on and away we go.

Then when all the work is done for the day I can nourish my hands with this wonderful handcream

Really with all this pampering I should have beautiful hands although nothing can make them long and elegant and they still remain a pair of small, wide gardener's hands but they are a whole lot better than my teeth!!)

HOW TO BE HAPPY?

Head into the garden, that's what does it for me! After attending a funeral last week and realising once again how quickly everything which is familiar changes, this gardener was in slightly melancholy mood. Nothing for it but to head outside. At this time of year the garden is continually changing too: those bright yellow tete a tete have now given way to colourful tulips, a bare patch of earth is home to fresh asparagus spears working their way to the surface and the apple blossom is bursting into bloom. In another few days or so I may see the first leaves of my early potatoes and the sweet peas and tomatoes I have planted should be up and raring to go. From one weekend to the next there is always something new and exciting to see and I can't believe how quickly everything has grown during this unseasonably warm spell. Even the bluebells seem to be opening earlier than usual. Mothers Day

It has been pretty busy here at Garden Divas HQ with orders for lucky Mums ranging from the ever popular Floreo 370 Garden Gloves to the fab new Tulip & Rose Garden BasketBut as I write this blog on a Sunday afternoon my house has been invaded by the smell of Dettol!! My beautiful daughter succumbed to a sickness bug overnight and the Mother'sDay lunch out has been cancelled . Oh well these things happen - all part of being a Mum!! Instead of going out I've treated myself to a long soak in the bath using the beautiful Gardener's Bath & Shower Gel which makes a lovely bubbly bath and certainly helps to relax and unwind (And after all I am a special gardener)!! Now I think I will head off into the garden for a while, maybe plant my second lot of potatoes - Aaron Pilot. I've already set some Charlotte potatoes which are a salad variety - my family tradition has always been to set the first lot of potatoes on Good Friday but as Easter is so late this year I have already got going - but don't worry I will still be setting some then - "Cara" which make nice jacket potatoes. And that is just what my daughter is saying she will be living on this week - jacket potatoes until her tum has settled down. My late Mother used to say if you have a potato and an apple, then you have a meal - a simple one at that but if grown in your own garden absolutely delicious!!! And Mums really do know best!!

I have had withdrawal symptoms from the lack of gardening over the winter so have been making the most of the (slightly) better conditions to get outside.

I've lost quite a few of my shrubs in the cold snap - hebes, in particular several shrubby veronicas, a Sun King - look at these poor things

and even the lavenders which is such a shame as I had a lovely lavender pathway. They will all have to be nipped out and replaced. Think I'll try box hedging as that's pretty hardy with just a lavender at the front edge so I can brush past and get that wonderful smell.

I also set some Broad Beans last November and now have only 3 plants remaining due to the harsh weather!!! Fortunately we have a brilliant market nearby and I managed to pick up some young plants quite cheaply so will be setting them out this weekend. Broad Beans do tend to get covered in blackfly which is such a nuisance - but I am going to snip out the tops of the plants when they are in flower to try and deter them as the aphids always love the soft new growth at the top. Fingers are fine for this job but I think the Deadheads Mini Snips with their sharp blades will be better.

They should also be good for the tagetees I grow every year as I tend to be a bit clumsy when nipping out the tops to make a bushy plant and end up ruining the young growth.

Just pop them in a pocket to keep them to hand and at £3.95 they are a bargain!! Lots of our customers think so too so snap them up before they are gone

A Moment's Peace!!

That's all I wanted this week was a moment's peace!! At the end of last week I lost my business phone line so it has been quite peaceful in that respect - but the rest of the week , well.....

Having coped with decorators painting the office and working in a complete mess, this Monday the internet went down, not good for an online retailer. I then spent over 2 hours on the phone trying to work out what was wrong only to come to the conclusion that a new router was needed!! So now we were offline and with no phone!!

Fortunately we were all off to Spring Fair on Tuesday sourcing new products and meeting with suppliers - always nice to catch up with everyone particularly when they get out the wine!! Wednesday morning - exhausted and the old back playing up again after a long day but loads to think about and sort. New router arrived and was installed and hey presto we were up and running (but still no phone!!!).

Ouch!!!

Most people understand that spending time in the garden can deliver a host of health benefits and so, feeling rather stodgy after the Christmas break, I recently headed outside for a bit of a tidy up. The sun was shining as I set about raking up leaves, removing dead plants ruined by the snow and icy blasts (Sprouting Broccoli was a write off). But looks were deceptive and there was a cold north wind blowing right across my back and even though I was suitably attired (well I thought I was) I ended up the next day feeling like an old crock bent over with a pulled muscle brought on by the cold.

The trouble is I do most of my gardening from a standing position rather than using a kneeler which is daft really as I have a fabulous selection of Kneelers right on my doorstep. So which one of these should I choose as they are all lovely.

And the new Kneelo - well I'm getting some really good feedback on that and it's nice and light to carry round.

Any way no time to ramble on today as it's my BIRTHDAY!!! So off to blow out the candles on my cake - just hope I don't put my back out again doing that -there are rather a lot of candles!!!

Herts Business Awards

Way back in November we attended the Herts Business Awards 2010 as finalists in the Best Website category!! We didn't win ( yes we were robbed) but had a fab evening nonetheless and here we are with Chris Hollins who presented the awards

It was straight back to work the next day and we soon sobered up!! Orders flooded in through November and December making it our best Christmas trading period yet so even though we were pipped at the post for an award it is you, our customers, and your lovely feedback that make it all worth while!!

We have been very busy bees at the Garden Divas camp just lately with loads of new products coming on board and customers shopping early for Christmas. It's not leaving much time for anything else at the moment but I did manage an hour in the garden on Wednesday morning this week and I still say it is the BEST therapy - felt really energised by the fresh air. Just did a bit of weeding and potted up some planters with dwarf tulips and violas - I prefer violas to larger pansies myself. My supplier was selling the bulbs off so they were a bargain - I am always a bit late in setting spring bulbs but they don't seem to come to any harm!!

Purple Passion

The arrival of the purple majesty potato in our supermarkets
reminded me of the time I bought some purple crisps ( at a London show sometime ago) and passed them off as Pot Pourri - well it gave everybody something to talk about at my party!!!

So little time, so much to do

How many women feel the same way?? I thought that an early September break in the sun would set me up nicely for the busiest months of our trading year and returned home feeling truly relaxed. Since then my feet haven't touched the ground and there's not even been a lot of time for gardening - until today that is. I've managed to squeeze in a couple of hours in the garden when the rain stopped for once and the sun came out. I've mainly been weeding - those weeds have certainly grown in the last few weeks - what was it that someone said?? "Weeds are only plants in the wrong place" Mm - not sure about that one - they are certainly in the wrong place in my garden at the moment!!

So what have I been up too since coming back from my hols - well basically (apart from the various domestic issues that feature largely in a women's life) I've been busy sourcing some fab new products for our website. Lovely chintzy items from the Garden Girl range- the Garden Plant Bag is my favourite,

a beautiful pink Petunia apron from Dotty Designs which is oh so pretty

and a cute Robin Watering Can

which should make a very appropriate gift at Christmas.

Oh and we've just taken delivery of the White Christmas Grobox Garden

which can be planted from now and all through the winter months. If it will make my gardening life easier I'm certainly going to be planting some of these easy peasy boxes for lovely early Spring colour and it may save me some time too!!

Sometimes – just sometimes do you think the male species hales from another planet?? Couldn’t they just for once multi task or maybe recognise that women are just a tincy wincy little bit emotional at times?? Or tired?? Or tetchy?? Or are, for once, right?? During a fraught weekend when the only remaining items needed for a dinner party were 4 nectarines why did my hubby come home with a bag of clementines??? Was this the straw that broke the old camel’s back do you think? I know, I know, it doesn’t really matter in the broad scheme of things but having worked all week, cleaned, shopped, cooked, arranged our social life – did he then need to burn the meat on the barbie too!!!

Ah well Sunday dawned bright and clear and I went out into the garden for my dose of therapy. Having given some shrubs a haircut (a little too severely I admit) and pulled up some plants (fed up with those leggy offerings) I noticed my new Filigree Frog sitting on the side and, grumpy and tired as I was, it made me smile. With a little gold crown on his head he makes a natty garden ornament and you can tuck him between your patio pots where he will reside happily all year round. (And he may be the only frog who never answers you back!!)

I also weeded around the young sprouting broccoli plants and found them covered in whitefly so gave them a spray too, then used the Birds Away Kit to help shoo off the darned pigeons which made a beeline for last year’s plants and practically demolished them before I could cover them up with netting to await the sprouting tips to appear.

Unfortunately the garden helper (another man – need I say more) decided that although I had netted them they were only fit for the compost heap so pulled them all out!!!! This year I shall put up a KEEP OFF sign.

Men – don’t you just love em!!

Come dine with me – or not when it’s so hot. After a busy week working the last thing I want to do is spend ages in the kitchen so at the end of last week we just had salad – no ordinary salad mind you as I had plenty of salad leaves in the garden courtesy of The Seedbed Roll an ingenious method of growing. The seeds are impregnated onto a rather bright blue matting which you just lay down onto well cultivated soil and then water it. But what I really like about it is that it has its own miniature polytunnel built in – brilliant - as I found all my yummy leaves were clean, slug free, and not nibbled by the countless rabbits that seem to congregate in my garden until my lazy cats decide to chase them away. And you can just cut it to size to fit into a planter or small space.

So here is the finished result,

looking rather delicious if I may say so, with the addition of some spicy chicken courtesy of good old M & S, crispy bacon, new potatoes, broad beans (from my garden of course) plus cucumber, peppers, tomatoes, celery – basically anything decent found in the bottom of my fridge. Just add salad dressing of your choice and tuck in.

I love this time of year in the garden when all my hard work is coming to fruition – picked a few raspberries yesterday for breakfast, had broccoli for Sunday lunch and have had broad beans galore (– a favourite dish with these is to fry a chopped small onion with crushed garlic if desired, and bacon lardons, lightly cook the beans, then stir it all together and serve piping hot.)

Luckily I’ve always been able to grow some veg or fruit even when I only had a postage stamp sized garden – growbags were the norm then. It can be time consuming I suppose but at this time of year it sure is worth it.

Chelsea Flower Show 2010

I was lucky enough to enjoy beautiful weather on my visit to Chelsea Flower Show last month and even though I arrived home exhausted having walked halfway across London to find a taxi – it was worth it.

Local garden designer Philippa Pearson’s Victorian Aviary garden was just one of the amazing show gardens and the sights and scents in the pavilion were just amazing. Harkness Roses based near Hitchin had a beautiful display and everywhere I looked there was an abundance of colour. And we Garden Divas do love colour!!

I also met up with Claudia from Dig It™ who manufactures the only Ladies DIY/Garden Gloves to protect your manicure – now at a special price in our June Offers.

It was great to learn about the idea behind these gloves, their development and the girls’ appearance on Canada’s Dragons Den. Claudia and I spent most of the day together and I believe she was quite overwhelmed by the experience which is Chelsea Flower Show!

Five Minutes of Fame?

Last weekend I braved the cold and the rain to make a quick trip to Knebworth Garden Show. It was very quiet but I must say there were some lovely plants there. I didn’t intend to stay long but a lone stall caught my eye and I wandered over to take a look.

I loved the idea of this company http://www.dinnerpartyallotments.co.uk/ and thought perhaps we could exchange links from our respective websites so I proffered my business card.

“Are you Garden Divas?” he said. “Yes that’s me” I said. “My wife would love to meet you – don’t go away” he said and disappeared. Was there really someone out there who was desperate to meet me or had he made a mistake? I waited and was introduced to Jet who made me feel that I had truly arrived on the garden scene – yes she did love my website, my business, my blog etc and seemed really chuffed to chat to me. Well it made me feel good – it’s always nice to get a bit of feedback and, I suppose that is the disadvantage of running an online company – you don’t get to speak with many of your customers (or admirers!)

Jet’s business is inspirational – encouraging children and families to grow and cook together so please do take a look at her website or go and chat to her at Chelsea Flower Show (25th – 29th May2010) where she is exhibiting.

In the meantime if you would like to get growing but have limited space why not start off with The Sticklebag and grow a few tomatoes - you should be able to grow plenty to make your own fresh tomato sauce – perfect with pasta anytime.

Easter Hols!

Well that was it – the Easter Holidays!! It went by in a flash and not a morsel of chocolate has passed my lips!!! Gave it up for lent and feel so much better for it that I have decided to try not to eat any although it is proving hard with the mounds of Easter Eggs in this house!! Hopefully some of that will disappear when my son goes back to University next week!!Traditionally for me Easter is the time to really get on with my vegetable growing. I always like to set my seed potatoes on Good Friday and although it was not the best of weathers I managed to set a salad variety – Charlotte, as well as some red and white onions all in a nice straight line thanks to the Vegetable Row String Line

I am also trying out the Dig It™ Garden/DIY Gloves this season and they are proving to be very comfortable indeed particularly for the heavier jobs around the garden helping my hands stay clean and mud free particularly when spreading the well rotted stable manure – lovely jubbly!!!

I thought I would also trial an English Summer Salad Seedbed Roll as salad leaves, although not difficult to grow, soon get eaten by slugs and the rabbits who find their way down our drive – obviously words spreads that there is a good dinner going here.

Now I have to say it was a rather unusual way to set seeds but I am really hopeful that I may get some jolly nice crops as it has its own built in mini polytunnel no less, which should keep those pesky creatures away. I will let you know!

If I don’t get good results though I may just have to go back to the chocolate!!

Spring Fair 2010!!!

I am still recovering from my expedition to Spring Fair NEC Birmingham on Monday sourcing new products for all my Garden Divas!!! Walked absolutely miles around the show collecting catalogues as I went so was relieved when it was time to catch my train back home only to then discover there were no trains going south!!! Disaster!!!! Overhead lines or something had put paid to a comfy seat and a coffee on the train while I browsed through the catalogues. After contemplating staying in a hotel (there were no rooms), taking a taxi (£133 – I don’t think so) I did finally make it home by train, standing up all the way and boy was I relieved when I walked through my front door, home but exhausted. A bowl of soup and a long soak in a hot bath with a Bathing Bliss “Fruits &Flowers” creamy melt did the trick and whilst not exactly a new woman I certainly felt a whole lot better than I did earlier waiting on a cold platform at Birmingham International!!The Wild, Wood & Rose Bathing Bliss collections are just perfect for unwinding after a long hard day in the garden or a prolonged visit to the Spring Fair NEC 2010!!! Birthday Blues!!

It was my birthday last week (don’t ask how old) and I am never that keen on having a birthday at the end of January. It has been a long month, cold and dreary, bills to pay and spring gardening in the sunshine seems a long way off!!

However I am lucky to have lovely family and friends who are very generous and amongst my gorgeous pressies was a beautiful bunch of anenomes – my favourites. Using a purple easivase they made a stunning display cheering me up and brightening the stone wall in my lounge.

On Wednesday 28th October, we watched the “What’s in My Sandwich?” BBC documentary hosted by Jimmy Doherty, unravelling the secrets behind the mass production of supermarket sandwiches!

Whilst we were slightly worried that only 60% of processed cheese is actually cheese we were really impressed by the technology that goes into producing a bag of salad! Seeing the complex process that goes into making a ready-made salad, really made us appreciate the food we take for granted and it’s this process that ensures the 1.5million salad bags going to supermarkets each week are bug free!

And whilst we all know how easy it is to pop to the supermarket to pick up a salad, with our Seedbed Roll it’s easy to grow your own English Summer Salad, producing up to the equivalent of 50 supermarket bags of lettuce! This week Kew Gardens hit their target of collecting and preserving 24,200 species of seeds from 10% of the World’s plant species. Kew Garden met this target 14months ahead of schedule and well within their set budget! The last seeds to be collected were that of the endangered pink banana (Musa itinerans) and they will now join the other seeds collected after 17 years of hard work! Garden Divas would like to say huge congratulations to Kew Gardens for this fantastic achievement in global conservation. We wish them the very best of luck in meet their 2020 target of collating 25% of world plant species! Well today (1st September) officially marks the end of summer but at least the sun is still shining here today (although I have already noticed the evenings getting darker earlier :-( ). However there is plenty more work for me to do at work and in the home and garden. In fact, with Christmas looming there’s even more multitasking ahead. Facing pressures from every angle, it's difficult to dedicate the time to keep healthy and grow your own produce. Grow your own..Potatoes

As you all know at Garden Divas we always try our best to fully test out our products (what a chore to have such luxurious gardening equipment- it’s a tough job but someone’s got to do it!). So we started a little experiment involving one single lonely potato and the Burgon and Ball Potato Planter .

Yes you guessed it- back in April we planted this one potato into the planter and watered it over the last four months to see how well it would grow. This Sunday we decided to see exactly how many potatoes we produced and were thrilled with the results- take a look at the picture below!Sitting in our very own Bradley’s rose trug, are approximately 10lb of potatoes produced in the single planter. This goes to show that you really can grow your own produce and save some pennies, even if you have very limited garden space.Of course a large part of the Garden Divas garden is dedicated to vegetable growing so here is a quick snap of all the other home grown veggies we are enjoying at the moment. A Passion for Purple!

Hi guys,

I went on a walk the other week near the Hitchin Lavender fields. These are situated in the lovely village of Ickleford, and they have farmed there for over 100 years. In fact I am lucky enough to keep my horse just up the road and we also love to hack on the bridleways near these fields. The smell is beautiful and the colour is electric! Hitchin Lavender was also recently featured in the Daily Mail so its great to see a local business doing well. Do you have any favourite areas near you to go walking/ running/ riding?

Holiday/ Returning to Veg!!!

Well we all went off on our hols to Spain and we have now returned to Hertfordshire. The weather was beautiful and it was lovely to take a well deserved rest! Here are a few snaps showing the glorious sunshine we could only wish for at the moment.

Since we've been back the rain has been a bit of a hinderence for getting out in the garden but we were thrilled to return to some tasty veg from the garden and since then we've been feasting like Kings :-). Going to get out in the garden this weekend and get some snaps of all our produce which I will put on here asap. Anyone else have any successes/ troubles with growing veggies?

Divas Visit Gardeners World Live

A couple of us headed off to Gardeners World Live at Birmingham NEC this Saturday to enjoy the show with the rest of you lovely Garden Divas! It was a great opportunity for keen gardeners to pick up some new products with a vast array of equipment and items available. Plus talented gardeners had recreated part of the new Greenacre garden as featured on the BBC programme. Easter Wash Out Waters Garden Divas’ Willow Planter!

Well the Easter break is truely over and what a wash out it was here!!! Despite the rain, potatoes were planted along with onion sets, carrots, and lettuce in the Garden Divas garden. (I am experimenting by planting just one seed potato into the attractive willow planter http://www.gardendivas.co.uk/details.php?prodId=230&category=5 using just compost from the compost bin to see how many new potatoes it will crop – will let you know in due course. )

The cucumbers (Marketmore) and tomatoes (Gardener’s Delight and Berry F1 ) are all growing strongly in the greenhouse; the courgettes are up as are the tagetes which will help ward off fly infestation on the roses in the summer, and I have also set some chilli seeds free with Gardener’s World magazine, so thank you to them for those!!! The small Haws watering can http://www.gardendivas.co.uk/details.php?prodId=174&category has proved to be perfect for watering delicate seedlings and, as with all Haws watering cans, looks set to last and last.

The first shoots of asparagus from the garden were enjoyed on Easter Sunday together with a rather large amount of chocolate so it is a good thing that there will be lots to do in the garden to work off all those calories!!!

I have to confess though that I managed to bend my favourite Burgon and Ball hand trowel http://www.gardendivas.co.uk/details.php?prodId=37&category -unheard of in over 30 years of gardening) which just goes to prove that you should always use the right tool for the job and that snowdrop bulbs firmly embedded deep within a bank need something a little more than a trowel to shift them!!! Oh well I will just have to choose another - now which colour shall I have?

At the moment it would seem I cannot turn the Television on, open a newspaper or listen to the radio without hearing about the Recession. This week I happened to notice a feature on Anglia News encouraging a scheme titled “Get Digging”. The programme featured celeb gardener Monty Don speaking about the benefits of growing your own produce. Here at Garden Divas we are a huge fan of this concept!
